Have you ever been responsible for
feeding a lot of people? Those of you with the cooking responsibilities in your
family will certainly be able to relate to the sign recorded in John chapter
six. In the text we discover that
Jesus miraculously feeds 5000 men with only five loaves of bread and two fish.
Now that alone would be a powerful story, but think about the fact that this
numbering did not even include the women and children present.
So the crowd
could realistically be estimated at upwards of 20-25,000 people. Jesus fed them
all.
A pre-cursor to the miracle is the fact that an unknown boy, a child, was
willing to share his lunch. If there is one consistent characteristic of
children it is that they are selfish. “Mine”, is often one of the first words
to come out of their mouth. But not this little boy, he shared what he had, and
in the hands of The Miraculous Messiah it was enough to feed the entire crowd
and provide twelve baskets of leftovers. We should never underestimate the good
that our giving, no matter how insignificant it may be, can accomplish.
Are you
willing to share with others what the Lord has provided for you today? This
crowd showed up hungry for spiritual things and their spiritual and physical
needs were taken care of by Jesus. I have discovered that God has a way of
caring for all of our needs, no matter how large or small they may be. We serve
a great God who is ready willing and able to do “exceedingly, abundantly, above
all that we could ever ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20-21). What is it that you
need from Jesus today? Your need is the birthplace of the miraculous!
